Chay Satan is single mother and she raises an 11 years old daughter alone. She lives in Doun Ov Village. Being a single mom raising a daughter alone is not easy, but she never gives up on herself and her daughters education because she wants her daughter to have a better future.

Chay Saton is single mother and she raises an 11 years old daughter alone. She lives in Doun Ov Village, Leang Dai Commune, Angkor Thom District, Siem Reap Province.  She always struggles with financial support for her daily expense and for her daughter education. Being a single mom raising a daughter alone is not easy, but she never gives up herself and her daughter education because she wants her daughter to have a better future.

Satan is interested in women empowerment program and she joined during the second round recruitment. She said that she was valued here in the program and she can express and share what she had been through as a single mom to other women because she always thinks that she was left behind in the community cause of her past.

 “I was trained in different topic but I start believed and have confident in myself when I got trained on self-management, self-esteem and confidence. The lesson is not only guiding me who I am now but also lead me to who I want to be in the future. I learned to accept what I have and set goal for who I wanted to be in the future for my daughter”

Satan was actively engaged in all the training program and she used to be a struggling mother, but now she became the role model of the other women in the community. She used to do a vegetable gardening, but she can only generate little income because of climate change. With the assistance from the project team, she was guided to create the other sources of income to support her and her daughter education. The team have approached her to start selling food and soft drink business under the CCDO micro loan start up fund and now her business runs smoothly because of her hard-work and commitment.

Satan now becomes the young start up entrepreneur in her community and the role model of the other women in the program.  

The project implements the comprehensive 2 year training curriculum program for changing disadvantaged and marginalized women and girls in the community. So far, the project has trained on various topics: health, business/SMEs, gender rights, gender equality, gender based violent, women in leadership, how to set personal and family goal, problem solving, critical thinking, self-esteem and self-motivation to those women and girls in 6 communities.

Thanks to Soroptimist International (SI) for funding this project. CCDO is not able to accomplish all the achievements without SI.

Soroptimist International, President Maureen Maguire Launches new Presidents Appeal  “Opening Doors to a Bright Future”

Launched on 1 October 2021, SI President Maureen Maguire invites all Soroptimists to join her in “Opening Doors to a Bright Future”.

With education at its’ heart, the SI President’s Appeal 2021-2023 will establish projects in each of our five Federations, the first being in the Federation of South East Aisia Pacific,  Cambodia,  where we will simultaneously provide vital access to education for girls aged 10 to 15 years and empower women to develop self-confidence through mentoring programmes. Objectives of the appeal are:

• Provide access to education in all its forms for disadvantaged and marginalised women and girls.
• Provide education to women and girls in a safe, friendly, and stimulating environment where there is equality of opportunity and support for all.
• Develop mentoring programmes that encourage confidence, self-esteem and increase the participation of women and girls in society and in decision-making.
• Increase access to information, educational resources, and services, to empower women and girls to make informed life-choices.

Member donations to Opening Doors to a Brighter Future will be transferred to Soroptimist International Foundation (registered in England and Wales 1194895) which has been set up to maximise opportunities for SI’s work around the world.

Investing in girls’ education brings high rewards, breaking cycles of poverty and aiding economic growth. Education empowers women, girls, and their communities, delivering skills and knowledge, whilst increasing confidence. Enabling women and girls to make informed decisions affecting their future wellbeing, health, participation, and quality of life.  

President Maureen explains: “Education is the tool to tackle multiple barriers faced by women and girls today. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, progress was visible in the delivery of quality education around the world, however, the past 17 months, has taken a toll, with UNICEF estimating 156 million children and young people are out of school. Of these, six out of 10 have no access to basic literacy and numeracy.

Estimates further suggest 750 million adults are illiterate, with many living in poverty, facing marginalisation, and disadvantage. Inequitable access to educational resources and learning is exacerbated by the digital divide, and as such, opening the door to education is an essential goal in each of our Appeal projects. This criterion will allow us to meet our proposed, measurable objectives, driving real change and lasting impact to families, and the local and broader communities where we work”.

Objectives

Provide access to education in all its forms for disadvantaged and marginalised women and girls.

Provide education to women and girls in a safe, friendly, and stimulating environment where there is equality of opportunity and support for all.

Develop mentoring programmes that encourage confidence, self-esteem and increase the participation of women and girls in society and in decision-making.
