Inspiring women articles

A recent pamper day organized by Soroptimist International of Launceston in collaboration with Citizen Advocacy Launceston was a great success. The event aimed to provide women with intellectual disabilities with an opportunity to enjoy pampering services that they may not usually have access to. The day proved to be a fantastic opportunity for these women to break out of their social isolation and connect with the wider community.

The event offered a range of services such as hair brushing, manicures, neck and shoulder massages, and belly dancing performances. The services were tailored to cater to the needs of the women and were delivered in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The event was a testament to the power of community collaboration, with members of the club volunteering their time and resources to make the event a success.

The impact of the pamper day on the women involved was significant. For many of these women, it was their first experience of such services, and they were thrilled with the attention and care they received. The event helped to improve their confidence, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing. The day also provided an opportunity for these women to connect with other members of the community, promoting social inclusion and breaking down barriers.

Overall, the pamper day was a fantastic initiative that had a positive impact on the women involved. It highlighted the importance of community collaboration and the need for inclusive events that cater to the needs of all members of the community.

SI Bangsar Financial Scam Forum

Along with e-commerce fraud, phone scams, investment scams etc, romance scams remain among the most common financial scams in Malaysia. As part of our advocacy program, SICB organized this Romance Scam Forum at Asia Pacific University on 29/3/2023. 3 credible speakers, Inspector Farhan, (Police DiRaja Malaysia), Dr Victor Goh (HELP university Psychologist and Head of Department of Psychology) and Nada Abbas (student representative from APU) were invited as our panel speakers in this interesting session. Big thank you to the SICB Advocacy Team for making this happen. Read More on their facebook page

Another interesting blog on this topic can be read on the Soroptimist International website, where Soroptimist Marie-Christine Gries, SI UN representative at UNESCO wrote about Internet for Trust.

SI Penang - WahLukis Art Exhibition

An art exhibition was held at the beautiful Blanc, Macalister Mansion (Penang) to showcase a new and unknown local artist WahLukis, in the hope of enabling and empowering her in her endeavour.

WahLukis is a homemaker with five grown-up children who all reside overseas. During the lockdowns, she picked up the paintbrush and started a new hobby, now a career.

HRH Crown Prince and HRH Crown Princess of Perlis graced this event. Established artists Sharon Kow, Choo Beng Teong, Madeleine Ekeblad and other artists also attended the WahLukis Art Exhibition, as did a hundred invited guests.

WahLukis donated 100% of the sale of her paintings at the event to SI Penang. AUD15,000 of WahLukis paintings were sold.

During the WahLukis Art Exhibition, SIP’s Blossom Women Project ladies also held our first meeting with AiSuka to hold basket weaving classes for women belonging to low income families. Material used for these baskets is recycled food packaging. Three classes were subsequently held in October 2022 for some women to learn a new skill through upcycling.
