"Women in Leadership: Sustainable Cities and Resilient Communities” Suharti Sutar

Suharti Sutar is an exemplary woman. Raised in a poor family in a remote village, she did not succumb to child marriage and went onto complete her education armed with a World Bank scholarship. Suharti attained a Bachelor's degree in Community Nutrition and Family Resource from Bogor Agriculture University. She gained a Master's degree in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA and a PhD from the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia in the field of Demography and Social Research.
Suharti accomplished groundbreaking programmes to improve gender equality across all sectors through education and national development planning. She was Director for Population, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) and later, the Head of Bureau for Planning and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Education.
Suharti will deliver a Special Address on Day 2 of SISWP Virtual COC2020 where she will discuss the importance of women in leadership roles and how the Government places high priority on women empowerment. She will share how women contribute significantly to creating sustainable cities and resilient communities based upon the example of Jakarta that has 11 million inhabitants.
Suharti is passionate about Soroptimist programmes of service and is a member of SI Club of Kemang.
