The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international Campaign which takes place each year commencing on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November to conclude on International Human Rights Day, 10 December 2017. This is a time to galvanize action and end violence against women and girls around the world. It was originated by the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and is supported each year by the United Nations Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.
This year the international theme is: Leave No One Behind: End Violence against Women and Girls. This theme reflects the core principle of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the campaign reinforces the UNiTE Campaign’s commitment to a world free from violence for all women and girls around the world, while reaching the most underserved and marginalized, including refugees, migrants, minorities, indigenous peoples, and populations affected by conflict and natural disasters, amongst others, first.
Soroptimist International of the South West Pacific continues to support this activity every year across our Federation countries. This year we will combine this with our Annual Walk the Talk activities and I ask that all our Members undertake some activity or project to raise awareness within their local communities by either participating in a Walk the Talk or simply by wearing Orange on 25th November to show you support to the world’s call to End Violence Against Women and Girls.
